Do you need to buy a headstone for a veteran in Maine?

By HeadstoneHub ·

Before buying a headstone for a veteran in Maine, check whether a government headstone or marker is available and how the cemetery handles the order. Eligibility and cemetery arrangements matter: a private cemetery and the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery System follow different ordering and installation processes. Confirm those details before paying for a separate memorial.

Start with the actual cemetery

For burial in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery System, the state's headstone guidance says staff order the government headstone, marker or niche cover using inscription information from the next of kin or authorized representative. For eligible burials, there is no charge for setting the stone or placing the niche cover. Ask the cemetery office about your family's arrangements before ordering anything separately.

The Southern Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery is in Springvale. A grave elsewhere in southern Maine is not automatically part of that system. Use the full cemetery name and lot information when contacting the office.

What changes in a private cemetery?

VA's private cemetery guidance explains that eligible veterans may receive a government headstone, marker or medallion without a charge for the item, while the private cemetery may charge for placement, setting, maintenance or other services. Ask for those costs in writing. A government marker benefit does not mean every part of a private cemetery installation is free.

Do not assume that a privately purchased family monument will be reimbursed or that a government marker can use any custom design. Review VA's eligibility and application guidance directly. The VA marker FAQ also advises confirming that the private cemetery accepts the desired marker style.

VA also states that only the National Cemetery Administration may inscribe a government headstone or marker. A request for a government memorial is different from ordering or engraving a privately purchased stone; confirm the correct process with VA and the cemetery.

Questions to settle before placing an order

  • Is this a veterans cemetery system burial or a private cemetery burial?
  • Has the family checked eligibility through VA or the cemetery?
  • Who will order the government item, receive it and arrange placement?
  • Which costs remain payable by the family?
  • If a separate family memorial is wanted, where may it go and what dimensions are permitted?

Keep the government item and any privately purchased memorial clearly identified in the written plan. Our base and foundation quote checklist helps separate installation responsibilities; its New Hampshire example is not a Maine cemetery rule.

When to request a private memorial quote

If your family is considering a separate permitted memorial, compare cemetery markers or family headstones after confirming the lot requirements. Send a private memorial inquiry with the cemetery, town, proposed wording and any existing approvals. HeadstoneHub reviews regional inquiries subject to cemetery requirements, scope and scheduling; VA and the cemetery determine benefit eligibility and government-marker arrangements.
