Who approves the memorial?
Start with the office responsible for the specific cemetery. The City of Providence's North Burial Ground page provides information and contacts for that cemetery. It is a useful local starting point, not an approval authority for every burial ground in the state. A municipal, religious, or privately managed cemetery can have its own process.
Ask what paperwork establishes permission for the proposed work, who must sign, and whether a monument drawing must be reviewed. If several relatives are helping, designate one contact to gather comments and confirm the final wording. How do we compare written quotes?
Compare the same material, size, finish, wording, and installation scope. Ask each provider to identify the base, foundation work, delivery, installation, and cemetery charges rather than comparing headline prices alone. If an inscription will be added later, distinguish the work being purchased now from future lettering.
Can you add a date to a headstone already in Rhode Island?
