Which cemetery office should you contact?
The town name is a starting point, but the cemetery operator is the useful contact. A municipal cemetery, a religious cemetery, and an independently managed cemetery in the same community can have different requirements. Ask for the current monument rules for your section and lot before paying for a stone.
For example, Boston identifies Mount Hope in Mattapan, Fairview in Hyde Park, and Evergreen in Brighton as its three active city cemeteries. The Boston Cemetery Division is a starting point for those properties; it is not the office for every cemetery in Greater Boston. What should a Massachusetts headstone quote include?
